This VA.gov page explains the Individual Unemployability (IU) benefit for veterans who can't hold a steady job that supports them financially due to a service-connected disability.
If eligible, veterans may receive disability compensation at the 100% disability rating level, even if their actual disability rating is lower.
Key eligibility requirements are:
* Inability to maintain substantially gainful employment due to a service-connected disability (odd jobs don't count).
* Either:
* At least one service-connected disability rated at 60% or more disabling.
* Two or more service-connected disabilities, with at least one rated at 40% or more and a combined rating of 70% or more.
The page clarifies that your disability rating won't change if you're granted IU, only the compensation amount. It provides an example to illustrate the benefit.
To apply for IU, veterans need to submit:
************************************************
* A Veteran’s Application for Increased Compensation Based on Unemployability (VA Form 21-8940).
* A Request for Employment Information in Connection with Claim for Disability Benefits (VA Form 21-4192).
Applicants must have a service-connected disability and may need to provide evidence like doctor's reports.
The VA will also review work and education history. Contact information (800-827-1000) is provided for questions. The page also mentions upcoming site maintenance on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, from 2:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. ET.
